Solar Hive

Studio Project

Anaisa Franco Studio

Date

2024

Location

Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA

Role

I worked independently on the computational design of this project under Anaisa Franco’s artistic and fabrication direction. My role was to develop a tunnel-shaped structure made of hexagonal boxes with flat surfaces, designed to accommodate solar lights. Additionally, the boxes needed to be flat on the plastic sheets provided, which would then be folded into closed boxes. The boxes were connected using plastic bolts. I was responsible for preparing the fabrication documents and files for laser cutting the boxes and CNC milling the wood base, and creating an annotated 3D model for assembly. Additionally, I developed the presentation diagrams for the project.

Solar Hive is an illuminated honeycomb tunnel installation presented at the Ignite Light Festival. The project was created by Anaisa Franco Studio and showcases a design that combines light and structure in an engaging, immersive installation.

Fabrication:
This project involved the large-scale fabrication and assembly of 368 hexagonal boxes, each integrated with a solar-powered light. The components were secured using approximately 7,500 nylon bolts and mounted onto a custom wood base.
This Project was preassembled in studio at Barcelona and the pieced were shipped to US for final assembly.
